The Bannerman region, as well as much of what is now northeast Edmonton, was annexed to the City of Edmonton in 1961. The Clareview district includes various residential neighborhoods, including Bannerman. The Clareview Outline Plan was authorized by Edmonton City Council in May 1972, and majority of the residential acreage in Bannerman was developed throughout the 1970s. The educational and recreational facilities in the community are conveniently positioned in the heart of the neighborhood. Bannerman's interior residential streets are built to facilitate traffic flow to and from the school. Clareview Town Centre on Victoria Trail houses a range of commercial enterprises, while an LRT stop is located north of 137th Avenue. H. Bannerman, a local merchant who arrived in the Belmont region in 1883, was the inspiration for the neighborhood's name. Mr. Bannerman was a member of the Belmont School Board of Education.
