Empire Park is a diverse neighborhood that serves a variety of uses including residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial. Unlike other Edmonton communities, Empire Park contains a significant percentage of multi-family housing and the majority of residential units are found in row housing and apartment complexes. The community is bordered on the east by Calgary Tail, on the south by Whitemud Drive, on the west by 111th Street, and on the north by 51st Avenue. The Southgate Shopping Centre is the neighborhood's main commercial development and a key shopping destination for inhabitants of the surrounding areas. Southgate is located on the western side of Empire Park and makes up around a quarter of the total property area in the neighborhood. There are additional businesses along 51 Avenue and Calgary Trail South and where residents can easily access a variety of commercial and employment opportunities as it is considered the neighborhood's central position. Construction of the neighborhood began in the 1960s and was substantially completed by the 1970s. Even though development did not begin until the second half of the twentieth century, the neighborhood has existed from the early 1910s and the name of the neighborhood most likely relates to the British Empire because many early Edmontonians were of British heritage.
