Listings in Garneau Edmonton

Garneau is one of Edmonton's oldest inner-city districts. It was first built as part of the City of Strathcona, and by the time it merged with Edmonton in 1912 where it had fully developed. The expansion of the surrounding University of Alberta and the development of the Whyte (82) Avenue commercial sector have changed the residential character of Garneau since its early existence. Although some of the old single-family homes have survived, the majority of the area has been converted into row housing and apartment buildings. Northwest Garneau is home to university student housing and fraternity houses and a substantial number of commercial enterprises may be found along 109 Street, Whyte Avenue, and 112 Street in the area. Laurence Garneau (1840-1921), an early resident in the area, was the inspiration for the name of the neighborhood and he was a former Hudson's Bay Company employee who moved to the area with his wife and family in 1874.
