Kenilworth is a suburb of Edmonton that was added to the city in 1960. The annexation's southern half, along the CPR right-of-way to Fort Saskatchewan, was turned into industrial use and it is located in the annexed land's northern section. With the exception of a business strip along Whyte Avenue on the southern border, Kenilworth is primarily a residential neighborhood and the majority of the business buildings in the area date from the 1970s, and a planted buffer separates the business strip from residential construction on the eastern side. It is made up of single-detached houses built in the 1960s and a few two-, three-, and four-unit home constructions. It contains three schools, two significant parks, and a sports center, and the neighborhood is defined by a central school/park location. Because it is bordered on both sides by major highways, residents enjoy easy access to numerous major retail and employment centers. This area was called in the early 1900s and may be seen on some of Edmonton's oldest maps and named after the town and castle of Kenilworth in the English county of Warwickshire that was constructed in 1122.
