Rideau Park is a small, densely packed neighborhood with a wide range of land uses. A collector road runs through the neighborhood to the south, an arterial road runs through it to the west, and highways run through it to the north and east. These highways are separated from the neighborhood by large manicured boulevards. The majority of Rideau Park's growth took place in the 1970s, with another substantial era in the late 1990s. Within the neighborhood, there are a variety of residential constructions. Single and semi-detached dwellings make up around a third of all residential units, with low-rise flats accounting for the rest. The school and park are in the heart of the neighborhood, and they also serve people from Duggan, to the south. Residential land use accounts for little more than a third of the overall land area, with commercial and institutional space accounting for the rest. Southgate retail area is located immediately north of Rideau Park across Whitemud Drive, in addition to the commercial services provided inside the neighbourhood. Along 111th Avenue, the mall also has a Light Rail Transit (LRT) station. The area is named after Rideau Hall, the Governor General of Canada's ceremonial house in Ottawa.
