The majority of York's building was constructed in the 1970s. Despite an early venture into multi-unit condominiums, single-family homes accounted for the majority of housing units in York. However, the number of multifamily complexes has expanded as a result of continuing expansion and renovation. Single and semidetached homes account for somewhat more than half of all residential units today, with row houses and low-rise apartment complexes accounting for the balance. Higher-density housing is typically found on the outskirts of the neighborhood, particularly around 66th Street and 144th Avenue. York contains a significant commercial component located in the southeast corner of the neighbourhood, and other shopping facilities located nearby at Londonderry Mall and in the Clareview shopping area. The York Elementary School is located in the centre of the neighbourhood and other schools are located in the adjacent neighbourhoods of McLeod and Kilkenny Annie A. York Secord, a local schoolteacher who went from Ontario to Alberta in 1889 to teach at Poplar Lake and subsequently Namao, gave the neighborhood its name.
